Movie Pick: Dinner for Schmucks

imageDinner for Schmucks

This week's pick in the wide releases is Dinner for Schmucks.

EN 5 Second Review: Absolutely tasteless, absolutely fabulous. Dinner for Schmucks is pure tasteless slapstick and we love it. Carell is at the top of his game.

"Dinner for Schmucks" tells the story of Tim (Paul Rudd), a guy on the verge of having it all. The only thing standing between him and total career success is finding the perfect guest to bring to his boss' annual Dinner for Extraordinary People, an event where the winner of the evening brings the most eccentric character as his guest. Enter Barry (Steve Carell), a guy with a passion for dressing mice up in tiny outfits to recreate great works of art. From Jay Roach, director of "Meet the Parents" and "Meet the Fockers" comes an unforgettable feast about two unlikely friends and one very memorable dinner.

Charlie St. Cloud

Charlie St. Cloud

image

Based on an acclaimed novel, "Charlie St. Cloud" is a romantic drama starring Zac Efron as a young man who survives an accident that lets him see the world in a unique way. In this emotionally charged story, he begins a romantic journey in which he embraces the dark realities of the past while discovering the transformative power of love.
Accomplished sailor Charlie St. Cloud (Efron) has the adoration of mother Claire (Oscar® winner Kim Basinger) and little brother Sam (newcomer Charlie Tahan), as well as a college scholarship that will lead him far from his sleepy Pacific Northwest hometown. But his bright future is cut short when a tragedy strikes and takes his dreams with it.
After his high-school classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) returns home unexpectedly, Charlie grows torn between honoring a promise he made four years earlier and moving forward with newfound love. And as he finds the courage to let go of the past for good, Charlie discovers the soul most worth saving is his own.

EN 5 Second Review: As much as we hate to say it, Zac Efron is not the problem with this movie, he actually does a quite good job. The problem is this sappy fantasy plays like a lifetime movie, not a theater movie. If Zac had not signed on no chance this movie makes it to theaters, lets hope he gets better material to work with in his next outing as he has the chops for it.

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

image In the age-old battle between cats and dogs, one crazed feline has taken things a paw too far. Kitty Galore, formerly an agent for cat spy organization MEOWS, has gone rogue and hatched a diabolical plan to not only bring her canine enemies to heel, but take down her former kitty comrades and make the world her scratching post. Faced with this unprecedented threat, cats and dogs will be forced to join forces for the first time in history in an unlikely alliance to save themselves - and their humans - in "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," a comedy that blends live action with state-of-the-art puppetry and computer animation. It's time for the fur to fly.

EN 5 Second Review: . Amazingly entertaining for the under 8 crowd, anyone over 8 years old will find this movie horrendous and you will leave the theater dumber than when you entered. We implore you to turn away from the screen if you must take a group of children.

Katy Perry certainly has two really big things going for her, let us just say that we are not totally convinced that those are her talent and personality, but as the pictures below and after the jump show, the two things she has going for her are nonetheless quite nice in their own rights.

M. Night Shyamalan Career Graph

This graph will help you understand why The Last Airbender was so horrific.

We feel pretty sure that the tomatometer is going to end up in negative numbers for his next movie Devil. Maybe that movie name is just how M. Night is feeling has his career in his hands.

To quote Weird Al Yankovic, “I think the studios should give M. Night Shyamalan just 30 or 40 more chances to make another good movie – then THAT’S IT.

DVD Spotlight: Clash of the Titans

image "Release the Kraken!" Ah, it could only be Clash of the Titans, the 2010 remake that retains the instruction to unleash the great beastie from the sea. The 1981 original boasted Ray Harryhausen's legendary stop-motion technique of animating various mythological creatures--it was his final feature project--and given the cornball approach of the movie in general, that was the main draw. The remake supplies new state-of-the-art special effects (released in 3-D) and a nicely muscular sense of momentum.

This Week on DVD

This week on DVD our picks is The Losers, an explosive action tale of betrayal and revenge, The Losers centers around an elite Special Forces unit sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search-and-destroy mission. But the team – Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar – soon find that they have become the target of a deadly double cross instigated by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Making good use of the fact they’re now presumed dead, the group goes deep undercover in a dangerous plot to clear their names and even the score with Max.

The Losers provides nonstop and pretty thrilling action, with a stellar cast, doing the comic book series from which it was adapted proud in the process. The movie may not have an airtight plot line, but its enthusiastic, talented actors--Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and the underappreciated Jason Patric--and the crisp, punch-packing direction by Sylvain White more than make up for it...

Genre: Action, Sci-Fi
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of violence and action throughout)

Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in an original sci-fi actioneer that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Director: Jon Turteltaub
Screenwriter: Matt Lopez, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer, Monica Bellucci, Toby Kebbell
Genre: Adventure, Comedy
MPAA Rating: PG (for fantasy action violence, some mild rude humor and brief language)

Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the "National Treasure" franchise, present "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" -- an innovative and epic romantic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.
Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It'll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

EN 5 Second Review: Nick Cage is brilliant as always, this Harry Potter clone is better than you think, but not exactly Gone with the Wind either. Fun enough though.

Movie Pick–Predators

Predators

Predators Poster

Robert Rodriguez presents a bold new chapter in the Predator universe, "Predators," shot on location under Rodriguez's creative auspices at the filmmaker's Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, directed by Nimrod Antal. The film stars Oscar®-winner Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've been brought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers - mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members - human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

EN 5 Second Review:
What more can be said about Robert Rodriguez. We never would have believed it, but he has resurrected this franchise along the lines of the original which is to say nothing more than a cowboy movie and it just works even today.

Despicable Me

Despicable Me

Despicable Me Poster
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal's new 3-D CGI feature, "Despicable Me."

Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes

EN 5 Second Review: It's hard to dislike this movie. It's not great, but very serviceable for a kids flick that parents can enjoy too. It's actually quite witty in the vein of Spy vs. Spy at times.
