Free MP3: Sand by Heart

image "Sand" is a slower, acoustic guitar based song from the new Heart album. I'm looking forward to hearing the full album later today; this is a nice (free) teaser in the meantime. Hearing the acoustic guitar from Heart is always a pleasant flashback to their halcyon early days, and the harmonies between Ann & Nancy are gorgeous.

Viral Video: Teenage Dream & Just the way you are - Acapella Cover - Katy Perry - Bruno Mars - Mike Tompkins

This is an amazing acapella cover done by Mike Tompkins. There are many who are doing this, none are doing it this well. This has the chops to go beyond viral turning Mike and his music style into an entirely new kind of music star. I'm not sure you can still call it acapella when he is playing all the instruments somehow, it needs a new name, but it doesn't matter. Just listen and watch.

Netflix now on iPhone and iPod Touch

Were not sure we want to watch movies on tiny devices, but Netflix is certainly going to let us find out. Netflix is already on TVs, computers, iPads, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and even the Wii, and now the service is finding a home on iPhones and iPods.

As long as you're running iPhone OS 3.1.3 or have an iPod Touch, you should be able to run Netflix. If you've used Netflix on the iPad, the experience is similar here, just smaller. Lots smaller. You can view all the movies you've added to your streaming queue, and search for more video content to watch right from your phone should you have some kind of tiny device fetish and eyes a lot better than mine.

New Music Spotlight: Katy Perry – Teenage Dream

Music Spotlight

The latest in music

This weeks pick is the fantastic Katy Perry's new album Teenage Dream

img3"I can't run from where I came from, nobody can," says Katy Perry. When it came time to make her exhilarating second album "Teenage Dream," Katy found herself increasingly drawn back home to Santa Barbara, Calif. Back to where they knew her before she became a superstar. Before she kissed a girl and liked it. And, certainly, before she sold 5 million copies of her Capitol Records blockbuster, "One of the Boys." "I love the vibe that Santa Barbara gives off and I wanted to really tap into the purity of my childhood and that feeling," says the two-time Grammy nominated singer. "It was really fun to get away and walk into the studio with no make-up on."

"Teenage Dream," will move you, both emotionally and physically. "When I was touring, I wanted people to dance more," Katy says. "So I wrote an album that made people move, yet didn't sacrifice the story substance that I had on the last record." The album, whose producers include Max Martin, Tricky Stewart, Stargate, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells, is a glorious evolution from "One of The Boys," It showcases an artist who dares us to join her as she experiences every facet of life.

"I'm giving everyone the full spectrum on this record," Katy says. "You're getting the sugary sweet, but you're also getting the `Oh my goodness, she had to sit down for a minute and let some things off her chest'." Fun first single, "California Gurls," declared by Entertainment Weekly as "unforgettable," is the undeniable summer anthem of 2010. Featuring Snoop Dogg, "Gurls" is a sizzling salute to sun-kissed days spent in Daisy Dukes and a bikini top. Other album highlights include the heartbreakingly wistful "The One that Got Away," the naughty, playful strut of "Peacock," the uplifting "Firework," the pulsing, stinging "Circle the Drain," and the spiritual quest of "Who Am I Living For."

And then, of course, there's the passionate, thumping title track. "I called the album `Teenage Dream' because I feel like I will always want to be that pin-up poster," Katy says. "I definitely want to be in everybody's dreams at all times until I get to Liz Taylor's age when I'm not in your dreams anymore, and I'm just a diva!"

It's irreverent statements like this that have branded Katy a true American original. She's the extremely talented girl next door with slyly captivating charm. After Katy topped Maxim's Hot 100 this Spring, Maxim editor-in-chief Joe Levy mused of her appeal: "It's that feeling you get when you suddenly realize that the smartest, funniest, coolest girl you know also happens to the best looking and a pretty good skateboarder, too. All of sudden, your crush goes supernova, and this is Katy's supernova moment."

She's the face most likely to adorn the bedroom walls of young girls who adore Katy not only for her musical brio, but for her playful yet sophisticated fashion sense (Who else could wear a blinking dress that lights up to the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute's Gala?) "I don't ever really want to come off as trashy," she says. `But I want people to know I'm definitely having fun."

Of that, there's no doubt. Seldom has an artist catapulted onto the world scene and captured not only people's ears, but their hearts as well. Since the 2008 release of "One of the Boys," Katy has taken a jet-fueled rocket pack to the top, wowing fans with her often whimsical, irresistible pop songs. Katy topped charts in more than 25 countries with cultural phenomenon "I Kissed a Girl," "Hot N Cold," "Thinking Of You" and "Waking Up in Vegas," and has sold more than 22 million digital tracks and mobile products worldwide. Katy erases any barrier between pop star and audience by writing all her own material. "You're getting a pure connection to the artist," Katy says. "You're not getting some idea of what that artist should be, you're getting a direct voice."

img3Nowhere is Katy's voice and vision clearer than in concert. She is a relentless road warrior, albeit one who comes complete with gigantic, blow up plastic strawberries to toss into the audience. As a newcomer, she stormed the Warped Tour stage for 47 dates in 2008, immediately winning over hardened rock fans with her ceaselessly energetic live show. Since then, she has steadily built audiences across the planet by touching down in more than two dozen countries and filling increasingly larger venues each time she returned to a city. 2009's headlining "One of the Boys" tour was a phenomenal success, selling out around the world.

She's also a popular television draw, appearing on countless talk shows, presenting and performing on the Grammys living out her lifelong dream of being lowered from the ceiling in a 600 lb. banana, serving as a guest judge on "American Idol," a celebrity contestant on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and hosting MTV's Europe Music Awards twice. More often than not she's adding to her trophy case at each stop, winning Best New Act at the Europe Music Awards, Best Pop Video at the MTV Japan Awards and International Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards.

As much as her life seems to play itself out in the press--she's appeared on the cover of more than 15 magazines--she reminds us the real Katy is in every note and every word of her music. "If you ever want an answer about how I felt about something or what I was going through or what I believe or my convictions or my love," she says, "You just have to listen to the lyrics." We can't wait to hear every word she has to say.

Get Teenage Dream now.

Belly Laughs: Making The Back-Up Plan
Deleted Scenes

Amazon.com Review: Jennifer Lopez and Aussie heartthrob Alex O'Loughlin are pitch-perfect foils in the romantic comedy The Back-up Plan--a film that's as light as the foam on a root-beer float, but which manages to be both romantic and very funny. Lopez, after a long absence from the big screen, is a pleasure to watch--an accomplished (and underrated) comedian who can spar and spark with the best of her peers, and better than most. Lopez's chemistry with the dreamy O'Loughlin will engage viewers completely. Lopez plays Zoe, a smart woman whose dating life has been dismal--and who finally decides to become a single mom so she can achieve at least the motherhood she's always desired. As fate would have it, she meets Mr. Perfect (or Mr. Close To It), O'Loughlin's Stan, on the very day she visits the fertility clinic and becomes pregnant with twins. The early stages of their courtship involve Zoe's increasingly desperate measures to conceal her growing belly. By the time she confesses her condition, Stan is smitten--but with hormones on both sides roiling, and reality about to set in as the birth approaches, both Zoe and Stan get cold feet. If the plot of The Back-up Plan is a bit predictable, the flinty performances of both Lopez and O'Loughlin keep the viewer utterly engaged. Supporting actors Eric Christian Olsen, as Zoe's best guy pal, and the lovely and hilarious Michaela Watkins (The New Adventures of Old Christine) turn in terrific performances, too, and cameos by veterans including Albert Klein (as Zoe's hyperenthusiastic doctor), Tom Bosley, and Linda Lavin round out the excellent acting ensemble. The Back-up Plan also features an engaging soundtrack with a danceable tune by Lopez, "What Is Love?" and memorable songs by Colbie Caillat, India.Arie, and more. The Back-up Plan shows that love may not always go according to plan--OK, it never does--but it's worth the ride, however the heart ultimately gets there. --A.T. Hurley

Viral: Controversial Miss Universe Contestants Body Paint Session

image Now, the conservative prudes are upset about some topless and bodypainting photos which feature Miss Universe 2010 contestants. Eff off will ya, there is nothing wrong with this photo shoot and no reason to create false hype over this. These women are beautiful and empowered.

I think Miss Trinidad and Tobago put it best.

"They exaggerated the curves of my body; it was in no way derogatory. It was an artistic expression. It expressed liberty, freedom, sexuality. That is what Miss Universe is all about."

The ‘Miss Universe’ competition began in 1952 and has always been known for promoting women who are strong, smart, independent, and respectable, a fact which has a former Miss Universe pageant organizer screaming “foul” at this year’s photo shoot, which featured the contestants completely topless, except for the body paint which glittered on their bodies…

Free MP3: Brian Wilson – They Can’t Take That Away From Me

image

Download today’s free mp3. They Can't Take That Away From Me

Brian Wilson has reimagined Gershwin in his own image. It isn't quite "the Beach Boys do Gershwin", but it's close. I'd say the main difference is that the harmonies on this particular track are less complex, and the falsetto harmony is lacking. There is the very typical rollicking piano feel heard on a lot of Wilson and Beach Boys tunes.

Wilson had unprecedented access and cooperation from the Gershwin estate. They let him use unfinished and unpublished songs and even change some lyrics, which is something no one else has been given permission to do.

This is a fun little number that harkens back to '60s pop and the girl groups of the day. This song does bear a resemblance to Tracey Ullman's cover version of Ms MacColl's "They Don't Know." "Release Me" is enjoyable on its own merits, though. I like The Like!

There are plenty of online stores where you can buy books. You'll find the latest bestsellers and old favorites, but if you're looking for classic works, save your money. There are plenty of places to find public domain titles for free online.

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams...literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz," "Shaun of the Dead") tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker's quest to power up with love in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."
Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It's getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart's ass--and now is back in town--to the teenage distraction he's trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn't been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.
As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues' gallery from her past--from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

EN 5 Second Review: In a word. Awesome. Scott Pilgram is everything that Kick-Ass wishes it was. This makes you buy into the world of Scott Pilgram completely and just go along for the ride. Cute Overdose: Lights Camera Jackson is a somewhat cute, somewhat creepy Kid Movie Reviewer

Jackson Murphy, is an 11-year-old film critic with a winning smile and a creepily adult-like delivery of informed, kid-friendly film reviews. It’s strange to see this kid doing reviews sounding like Roger Ebert back in the day. He also is becoming almost a hated meme on the internet with people either loving or hating Jackson to some extent. He is cute, but annoying as well and it seems strange to hear him reviewing PG-13 movies that are intended for an older audience.

Free MP3 Download: Psalm – Lee Scratch Perry

Download Psalm

image Review From Amazon: Luke "Scratch" Perry is regarded, along with Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock as one of the fathers of dub music, a branch of reggae that involves lots of sampling and remixing of older recordings. This track consists mostly of Perry, slurring his words like a drunk, repeating "Psalm, Psalm, Psalm" over a reggae beat and scads of eerie sound effects. From what I can glean, Perry is exhorting sinners to read the bible ("whoremongers, whoremongers, the psalm") for their own good. Since Perry includes the government and the police among the ranks of sinners, it's clear that this is more social commentary in the Bob Marley mode than religious proselytization in the Bob Dylan mode

    DVD Spotlight

Spotlighting some of our favorite DVD releases

    Kick-Ass

The cinematic equivalent of a half case of Red Bull chased with donuts, Kick-Ass is a giddy, violent experience--and not your average superhero movie. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it offers a set of heroes who are decidedly without superpowers: Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides he'll be just like a comic-book character, and puts on a ridiculous green suit to fight crime as the mysterious Kick-Ass. Luckily, somebody else had the same idea and comes along to rescue the incompetent crusader: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who also happen to be running around town wearing masks and vanquishing evil. And here we have the movie's masterstroke: Hit Girl, a pint-sized preteen who slaughters bad guys and swears like a sailor on leave (and was the focus of a measure of controversy when the movie was released). The main target of our heroes is a gangster (Mark Strong, Sherlock Holmes), whose neglected son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, McLovin from Superbad) figures he might just pull on a costume himself and become… Red Mist! (One of the many funny things about Kick-Ass is that the superhero names are hopelessly lame.) Director Matthew Vaughn is operating at the same glib level as his Layer Cake, with cutesy song cues galore and a freewheeling appetite for cartoon violence. This means the movie's high wears off quickly, but it does get high--a crazy, hilarious (and by the way: decidedly R-rated) kick...more
