Free MP3 Album: Autumn Jazz Sampler 2010

This Autumn Jazz Sampleralt has a great sound (is it the sampling and bit rates?)! While not inaccessible to casual jazz listeners I wouldn't call it easy listening or smooth jazz. Just very pleasant to listen too with great arrangements and improv! A no brainer to add to your music collection at the fantastic price of 0.00

image After the high-flying adventures of the first Iron Man picture, the billionaire arms manufacturer and irrepressible bon vivant Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) finds himself nursing a hangover. But not like any hangover he's had before: this one is toxic, a potentially deadly condition resulting from heavy metals (or something) bleeding out of the hardware he's installed in the middle of his chest. This is the problem Stark needs to solve in Iron Man 2, not to mention the threat from resentful Russian science whiz Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), whose father helped create the Iron Man technology. There's an even bigger problem for the film: the need to set up a future Marvel Comics movie universe in which a variety of veteran characters will join forces, a requirement that slows down whatever through-line the movie can generate (although fanboys will have a good time digging the clues laid out here). Actually, the main plot is no great shakes: another Iron Man suit is deployed (Don Cheadle, replacing Terrence Howard from the first film, gets to climb inside), Stark continues to bicker with assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and a weaselly business rival (Sam Rockwell) tries to out-do the Iron Man suit with an army of Vanko-designed drones. Mickey Rourke is a letdown, burdened by a wobbly Russian accent and looking skeptical about the genre foolishness around him, and Scarlett Johansson has to wait until the final couple of reels to unleash some butt-kickin' skills as the future Black Widow. That climax is sufficiently lively, and the initial half-hour, including Stark's smirky appearance before a Senate committee and a wacky showdown at the Monaco Grand Prix, provides a strong, swift opening. But the lull between these high points is crying for more action and more Downey improv.

Katy Perry’s Boobs are becoming our heroes.

Katy’s boobs are becoming stars in their own right as they seem to have taken on a life of their own.

image

Last Wednesday, Sesame Street announced that a video of Elmo and Katy would not be airing on the show because some parents had objected to Katy’s cleavage (the clip had been released on YouTube as a teaser for the new season, which began today) We found that horrifying in itself, but thanks goodness Katy’s boobs shot back with this SNL appearance. Yaa for Katy’s Boobs.

Here is the original that created the controversy in the first place.

All Katy wants is to play dress-up while she's at Sesame Street, but Elmo is being hot n cold!

This weekend at the movies

Pete's Preview Sep 24 by Peter Veugelaers © 2010

You don't easily forget Michael Douglas as the consummate, charismatic and greedy Gordon Gekko from his Oscar winning performance in Wall Street. In that film, Charlie Sheen's hot shot broker character studied under the wing of Gekko how to succeed without a conscience in the finance world. Over 20 years later, in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Gekko's released from prison and it seems prison has been good to him. A young hot shot trader (Shia LaBeouf), who is married to Gekko's daughter (Carey Mulligan), sides with him to warn of the coming global economic collapse indicating a change of allegiance from consumed by money to actually caring. That might take the edge out of the Gekko we've seen in Wall Street, although money never sleeps.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Wall Street 2 Poster
Release Date: September 24, 2010
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: Oliver Stone
Screenwriter: Oliver Stone, Allan Loeb
Starring: Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Carey Mulligan, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Ferlito, Charlie Sheen
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for brief strong language and thematic elements)
Official Website: WallStreetMoneyNeverSleeps.com

Shia LaBeouf stars with Michael Douglas, who'll reprise his Gordon Gekko role. Langella will play Lewis Zabel, an old-time broker who mentors LaBeouf's character, a young Wall Street broker.
When Gekko comes out of prison, he essentially has to redefine himself, redefine his character, he's looking for that second chance.
LaBeouf portrays Jake Moore, who is the fiancé of Gekko's daughter, played by Carey Mulligan; Josh Brolin as the head of an investment bank; and Susan Sarandon as Jake's mother. Charlie Sheen, who played the central role of Bud Fox, a young trader, in the original, will make a cameo in the sequel.

EN 5 Second Review:  Douglas is the movie. For nostalgia's sake it is a good movie. It falls down a bit when LaBouf is onscreen as comparisons to Douglas don't work for him. Overall a fun movie thanks to the performances of Douglas and Brolin.

Deal of the Day: The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] $36.99

image

Buy The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] for just $36.99

In this charming film based on the popular L.Frank Baum novel, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she encounters some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.

Review:

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages

Free MP3: Marty Stuart’s Branded

Download Marty Stuart's "Brandedalt" from his album Ghost Train: The Studio B Sessionsalt

image Marty Stuart is best when left to his own devices. Since the "no hat" days of the early nineties, Marty has taken control of his records, subsequently producing the masterpiece, "The Pilgrim", as well as classics, including "Country Music" and "Badlands".
I suspect even those who aren't fans of true (or traditional) country music can still appreciate that Marty is the "curator" of the legacy.
This album is no exception.
From the opening track, "Branded", with its sly homage to Merle Haggard, including Roy Nichols-like guitar licks, to a remake of the 1965 Warner Mack hit, "The Bridge Washed Out", to a lovely duet with wife (and legend) Connie Smith, "I Run To You", the 1960's country music sound is alive and well, just a bit more bright and shiny.
Standout tracks on this album, in addition to the aforementioned, include, "A World Without You" (my favorite). This track, folks, cannot be mistaken for anything BUT country music in its truest form. Also here is an instrumental version of Ralph Mooney's "Crazy Arms", featuring Ralph himself on steel. "Hummingbyrd", too, is a nice, ringing instrumental. Marty and Ralph collaborated on "Little Heartbreaker", a bouncy ditty that features some Wynn Stewart-like steel guitar licks.
Not everything works, but the minor nits I have with this CD do nothing to detract from this superior effort by Marty.
Be forewarned: If your idea of country music is dirty dishwater that's lost most of its foam, you probably won't like Ghost Train (The Studio B Sessions.)
If, on the other hand, you love music, and are able to discern between country music junkies and country music junk, you really can't go wrong with Ghost Train: The Studio B Sessionsalt .

New Music This Week

This weeks pick is the fantastic Hands All Over from Maroon 5

image Maroon 5 is back with its third studio album entitled Hands All Over, produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange (AC/DC, Foreigner, The Cars). The album, a killer hybrid of rock, pop, funk, and R&B, showcases the band's considerable strengths: buoyant, unforgettable melodies, sleek, stylish grooves, charged lyrics about turbulent relationships, and crisp, dynamic performances. Band member Jesse Carmichael comments on the new album, "Mutt really helped us play to the best of our ability. And it drove us to be bigger and better than ever. Everything he does is huge." Huge is a great way to describe Hands All Over, starting with the hard-rocking title track that is heavier than anything Maroon 5 has ever done…more

This Weekend at the Movies

image This week we get to see Ben Affleck relevant again with The Town. Affleck delivers this time out with a fast paced thriller that is well acted, intelligent, and even has everything we like in a movie with a great blend of action, drama, and humor. Highly recommended.

In the other wide releases, Alpha and Omega brings us proof that it is still possible to make a bad animated movie, Devil features Shamalamadingdong who is at it again with pedestrian thrills you will see coming before you even enter the theatre. The saving grace is Easy A which is surprisingly a smart and funny teen comedy.
