New Music Releases for November 23rd

New Music Pick: Cannibal by Kei$ha
This is a special 2010 release, the companion album to her hit 2010 full length Animal. Features eight new tracks plus one new remix.
Review: Great Postmodern Art in the form of Popular Culture

If you are a fan of the postmodern popular culture, the independent spirit, personal achievement in a singular artistic genre, then Ke$ha - and this new album - is for you. She has spent the last couple of years of her life in the pursuit of creation from the heart, through true musical expression.

Ke$ha is a true musical artist of the highest caliber, drawing from the stream of consciousness events from contemporary existence, going back referencing her opus "Animal", and making it very sure to the listener that this is a new world we are living in, and television and fame and emotions have become compartmentalized and filed somewhere in a dark corner of a computer.

Fame is a horrible disease, being rich is great and a curse, and personal freedoms and our choices are duct-taped to the wall with pieces of the Constitution.

She sees it all, and her music tells the horrible stories of truth but in a positive, subversive, life-affirming way. And what's wrong with that?...Read more

DVD Releases and Picks for November 23rd, 2010

DVD Pick: The Expendables

Description: Sylvester Stallone stars as Barney Ross, leader of The Expendables, a tight-knit team of skilled combat vets turned mercenaries. Hired by a powerful covert operator, the team jets off to a small South American country to overthrow a ruthless dictator. Once there, they find themselves caught in a deadly web of deceit and betrayal. Using every weapon at their disposal, they set out to save the innocent and punish the guilty in this blistering action-packed thriller.

Our View: The Expendables isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination but it knows exactly what it is trying to be and doesn't pull any punches. Great popcorn flick, but don't be looking for Oscar material here.

Keep It In Your Pants

Hilarious and unfortunately quite catchy tune and video by Taryn Southern, reminiscent of the really good SNL stuff. I really need to get this song out of my head, the only way I know to do that is to make you all listen to it.

Deal of the Day: Get Kid Rocks new album for just $3.99

image Get Kid Rocks new album today in mp3 format for just $3.99
Born Freealt

Kid Rock has had a long road to respectability, but the kid has finally made it to respectability with this his 8th studio album. That may not always be a good thing though as may of Kid Rocks fans love the Motor City attitude that is a little watered down here. It is a pleasant change of pace as long as he doesn’t go too far and lose who he is in trying to be more “commercial”.

It’s a fine line to walk and he does it on this album. I've been a fan of Kid Rock since his harder-edged days in "The History of Rock", but his last several albums have been more classic rock than hip hop. It's a change that I have grown to love. And the title track and the Sheryl Crow duet on this album are some of his best work to date.

    New Music Tuesday

    November 16 Music Releases

Featured Release: Kid Rock - Born Free

Kid Rock will release his 8th studio album, 'Born Free,' on November 16th via Atlantic Records. The record was produced by Rick Rubin and mixed by Greg Fidelman. The first single from the album will be, appropriately, 'Born Free' which hits radio September 14th. 'Born Free' is in many ways a transformational album for Kid Rock. While there is still the edge, wit, and swagger of previous albums, he doesn't rap, there's no metal - there isn't even a parental warning sticker.

Says Kid Rock, 'The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit. Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul.'

The bulk of the album was recorded live in a two week span in Los Angeles with a stellar cast of musicians including Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, David Hidalgo from Los Lobos and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. Studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta were used to incorporate collaborations with Bob Seger, Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown, Trace Adkins, and in a pairing surely never to be replicated - T.I. and Martina McBride on the track 'Care.' Kid Rock and Rick Rubin, as friends, have spent many hours talking about their respective histories - starting in hip-hop, crossing into and creating new territories - as well as the need for a great new American classic rock record that challenges the field. 'Born Free' is in part the result of those conversations - an album that is meant to be played from start to finish.

    This Weekend at the Movies

For the first time in a while, there is not a new release we can recommend this week in wide release. Take the time to catch up on some good movies on Netflix or DVD, but stay away from Saw 3D whatever you do.

image They were a foursome revered by high school kids. Hannibal Smith, B.A. Baracus, Murdock and Face - and everyone had a favorite. Memorably, someone had to pick Mr. T, the actor behind Baracus, and everyone identified, or was given, a character that fitted. The new batch of actors playing these now old hats has shoes to fill, indeed, except if you’re fifteen and don’t have a clue who Mr. T is.

Bradley Copper as Face, for reasons which have everything to do with his acting ability, is squared off with an agent who used to be his girlfriend (Jessica Biel), but I wondered where he got the time between tours of duties. Her antagonism towards him makes for the first sign of tangible conflict and that after a lengthy opening…more

    This weekend at the movies

    Peter’s Preview October 22, 2010

    By Peter Veugelaers ©

It’ll be of interest to see how Clint Eastwood directs a supernatural thriller, Hereafter, after Gran Torino. Matt Damon stars after this year’s Oscar nomination for supporting actor in Invictus, also directed by Clint. The director keeps on going. It’s been a phenomenal decade. Since 2003, he’s made Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino and Invictus. All impress with distinctive character, like rich wine taken moderately after years in the cellar. Savor the taste.

    This weeks Pick

This week's pick in the wide releases is Hereafter Hereafter is some of Clint Eastwoods best directorial work, plodding and slow at times, but in the end the exploration of the afterlife is as comforting as it is unsettling.

Last Weeks Pick: RED. may not be the best movie we have seen all year, but it is the most fun we have had at the theater this year.

image The album from which this single is derived (Kill City (Remastered)alt ) was originally released in 1977. Took me awhile to finally get around to landing down a copy of this CD, which I assumed it was Iggy's very first solo record. Guess it's actually a collaboration between Iggy and former Stooges guitarist James Williamson. Was definitely worth the wait. Tracks I thought made the grade were the *ss-kicking title cut "Kill City", "I Got Nothin'", the classic "Johanna", "Consolation Prizes" and "Lucky Monkeys". Line-up: Iggy-vocals, James Williamson-guitar, Scott Thurston-bass, keyboards & harmonica and Brian Glascock (Motels)-drums. A should-have.

Iron Man 3 get release date

The next time audiences see Robert Downey Jr. portray Tony Stark/Iron Man, he'll be sharing the spotlight with a rabble crew of superheroes in "The Avengers" (in theaters May 4, 2012). But let's face it, Stark has never been one for sharing the spotlight. He needs his own movie. Luckily, RDJ and his big-screen alter-ego(s) are getting just that: "Iron Man 3" has been given an official release date of May 3, 2013.

The folks at Improv Everywhere used 3,000 participants for their latest mission. Each had an MP3 player that received simultaneous instructions (and music). That had to appear really strange to anyone not in on the plan! It all culminated in a flashmob at Bryant Park.

    Flashmobs are fun!

    Story
Leading a squad off a landing strip in 'Modern Warfare 2'The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs.

    Gameplay
The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them.

Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches.

Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality.

    Free MP3 of the Day

image Today’s free mp3 is Suzanne Vega’s new song Tom’s Diner off of her Close-Up, Vol 2, , People and Places (Deluxe Edition) album. Most remakes are decent at best, this one is great. If you don't own this song, it is extremely insightful, mind provoking, thought provoking even. I highly recommend both the artist and the song to everyone.
