This weekend at the Movies

This week there will be no pick of the week as the new releases are absolute rubbish. Furry Vengeance is as bad as its unfortunate title, in fact it is the worst movie we have seen in a long time and we have seen some very bad movies. The other movie in wide release is Nightmare on Elm Street. Whether it is because we remember it better than it was or if Robert England is just that much better than successor Jackie Earl Haley we cant say for sure. What we can say for sure is that we were terrified of England's Freddie. We are just disturbed by Haley's Freddie. We had high hopes for this film, but it under delivered in every way a horror film can. The idea of a Freddie movie is to make you not want to sleep. This one induced plenty of yawning. Our recommendation is to use this weekend to catch up on any of the more recent releases that are so much better, and to prepare for next weeks release of Iron Man 2

Recommended recent releases:

The Losers: Enjoyable for action/comedy fans
Oceans: Groundbreaking and visually stunning
Kick-Ass: Hilarious if somewhat disturbing.
Date Night: Carell and Fey make for a fun date night.
Clash of the Titans: Cheesy fun.
How to Train Your Dragon: A great and fun ride.

M.I.A. – Born Free

Warning, this video by M.I.A. is extremely disturbing and features graphic violence. We don’t care for it much personally even though it does send a message, but that’s besides the point. The point is that it is art. You may not like it any more than we do, that means you don’t have to hit play, the point is that it is art and should not be censored based on some arbitrary evil corporate decision. (Sure Google isn’t Evil.) We are posting it specifically because YouTube has banned it and that is not cool.

Artist Censorship Sucks.

Music Spotlight – Bret Michaels

This weeks pick in honor of Bret Michaels troubles is a classic from back in the day. Instead of featuring one song, we are featuring the compilation Poison featuring the greatest hits from 1986-2000.

Michaels' music career began with the creation of the band Paris, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1983. After several lineup changes his band was renamed Poison, and moved to Los Angeles later that same year. Poison became one of the biggest glam metal bands in the world.

Bret has also starred in the VH1 reality show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels and its sequels, and as a judge on the talent show Nashville Star. He is a contestant on NBC's reality show Celebrity Apprentice 3.

Raine music video. Raine is off of Michaels solo effort Songs of Life and is a touching tribute to his daughter. Good luck to you Bret and we are all hoping for a long life watching your daughters grow up.

This Week at the Movies

This week the best of the major releases is Oceans from Disney especially for Earth day and it bests last years similar groundbreaking Earth. For the action/comedy fans there is the very good The Losers which is a bit of an A-Team clone, but enjoyable for action/comedy fans. Bringing up the rear is Rom-Com The Back Up Plan which we are torn on as we love Jennifer Lopez in it, but we can't get over just how bad the rest of this movie is.

Other recommended recent releases:

Kick-Ass Hilarious if somewhat disturbing.
Date Night Carell and Fey make for a fun date night.
Clash of the Titans which is cheesy fun.
How to Train Your Dragon is a great and fun ride.

Oceans Review

image This is our pick for this week. Disneynature, the studio that presented the record-breaking film "Earth," brings "Oceans" to the big screen on Earth Day, 2010. Nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered by water and "Oceans" boldly chronicles the mysteries that lie beneath. Directors Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud dive deep into the very waters that sustain all of mankind—exploring the playful splendor and the harsh reality of the weird and wonderful creatures that live within. Featuring spectacular never-before-seen imagery captured by the latest underwater technologies, "Oceans" offers an unprecedented look beneath the sea in a powerful yet enchanting motion picture that unfolds on April 22, 2010.

EN 5 Second Review: Visually this film is a tour de force, we could do with a little less Pierce Brosnan though as he did his level best to put us to sleep. The visuals though keep you well awake and are stunning to behold…more

The Losers Review

image An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, "The Losers" centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team--Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar--find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they're joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

EN 5 Second Review: Yes, it feels like an A-Team clone, and yes it is over the top and stupid at times, but it was a fun ride from beginning to end….more

The Back Up Plan Review

image

After years of dating, Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) has decided waiting for the right one is taking too long. Determined to become a mother, she commits to a plan, makes an appointment and decides to go it alone. On the day of her artificial insemination, Zoe meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin) – a man with real possibilities

We are torn on this one as JLo fans she throws herself into the role and is still likable in this role, so for her we liked it. Everything about this movie other than Jennifer was...more

"How come nobody's ever tried to be a superhero?" But, overcoming all the odds, the eager yet inexperienced Dave quickly becomes a phenomenon, capturing the imagination of the public. However, he's not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly-trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit Girl have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local Mafioso, Frank D'Amico. And, as Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank's son, Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass's arch-nemesis, Red Mist - the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil - in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Or die trying.

EN 5 Second Review: Twisted, profane, ultra-violent, shocking, completely audacious, out of left field and yet wildly entertaining. It has a kind of violent yet fun Tarantino touch. In our audience polls everyone under 40 loved it, over 50 not so much. you might not want to take grandma.

Death at a Funeral Review

Death at a Funeral PosterEN 5 Second Review: A complete waste of time. Why would you remake a three year old movie and make it worse than the original, what exactly is the point. There are a couple of laughs, but this is a movie to wait for cable. It feels made for cable to begin with.

This Week on DVD

Pirate Radio

Written and directed by Richard Curtis, this British ensemble comedy is a valentine to rock ‘n’ roll as it existed around 1966. Although the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who and other rock groups were enormously popular at that time, the music was seldom heard on regular radio stations in the UK. This led to the setting up of unlicensed radio stations aboard ships anchored in international waters and broadcasting rock all day and all night. The movie tells the fictionalized story of one such station, and the large cast includes Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Rhys

Movie Pick of the Week: Clash of the Titans

 Clash of the Titans (2010)

In "Clash of the Titans," the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

EN 5 Second Review: Beefy, Cheesy, Men in short skirts, fighting goodness. The 3D is obviously tacked on, but effective in spots. Just as cheesy and fun as the original. It's not like they are remaking The Godfather here.

Opening Night Audience Rating:

Opening night audience rating is based on feedback from our partner cinemas and is not a reflection of the quality of a movie, but the audience who attended the movies enjoyment

Clash of the Titans (2010)

The Last Song (2010)

 The Last Song (2010)

Based on best-selling novelist Nicholas Sparks' ("A Walk to Remember," "The Notebook") forthcoming novel, "The Last Song" is set in a small Southern beach town where an estranged father (Greg Kinnear) gets a chance to spend the summer with his reluctant teenaged daughter (Miley Cyrus), who'd rather be home in New York. He tries to reconnect with her through the only thing they have in common—music—in a story of family, friendship, secrets and salvation, along with first loves and second chances.

EN 5 Second Review: Miley might be cute, but she cannot act her way out of a paper bag and it shows here.

The Last Song (2010)

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

"Hot Tub Time Machine" follows a group of best friends who've become bored with their adult lives: Adam (John Cusack) has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Rob Corddry) is a party guy who can't find the party; Nick's (Craig Robinson) wife controls his every move; and video game-obsessed Jacob (Clark Duke) won't leave his basement. After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, the men wake up, heads' pounding, in the year 1986. This is their chance to kick some past and change their futures – one will find a new love life, one will learn to stand up for himself with the ladies, one will find his mojo, and one will make sure he still exists!

EN 5 Second Review: Good old fashioned ode to the early 80's raunchy comedies. It's almost unnecessarily raunchy, but that's part of it's charm in a way. For something this raunchy to seem nostalgic and cute says a lot about our culture here in the United States.

Opening Night Audience Rating:

Opening night audience rating is based on feedback from our partner cinemas and is not a reflection of the quality of a movie, but the audience who attended the movies enjoyment

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

From the studio that brought you "Shrek," "Madagascar" and "Kung Fu Panda" comes "How to Train Your Dragon." Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup's world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

EN 5 Second Review: We almost cannot describe how good this movie actually is. The 3D is amazing, but the story is as good as anything Disney has ever done. This movie has the heart of Old Yeller and the excitement and 3D of Avatar.

Opening Night Audience Rating:

Opening night audience rating is based on feedback from our partner cinemas and is not a reflection of the quality of a movie, but the audience who attended the movies enjoyment
